Earth Sessions #6: Sustainable Harvests: Nourishing Our Planet

This week: How can agriculture + our food systems be sustainable, Sustainable living tips and more!

Sustainable Harvests: Nourishing Our Planet

This week we are going to explore the intersection of food, agriculture, and sustainability. We delve into innovative practices and initiatives that are nourishing our planet while supporting local communities.

You can never see a plant grow, but they do.

👩🏽‍🌾 Support Local

Sourcing food locally reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation, as it requires less fuel for shipping and refrigeration. By supporting local farmers, it encourages sustainable farming practices that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation. Local food systems promote resilience against disruptions in global supply chains and help preserve agricultural land from urban sprawl and industrialization. Additionally, buying locally fosters a sense of community, strengthens local economies, and fosters connections between consumers and the source of their food.

🥑 Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative agriculture is a holistic approach to farming that aims to restore and enhance ecosystems rather than deplete them. It focuses on building healthy soil, increasing biodiversity, and improving water retention to create resilient agricultural systems. By employing practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, and no-till farming, regenerative agriculture helps sequester carbon, mitigate climate change, and promote sustainable food production. Ultimately, regenerative agriculture seeks to harmonize human activity with nature, creating thriving landscapes that benefit both the environment and agricultural productivity.

🙏🏽 Food Waste Reduction

Food waste reduction involves implementing strategies to minimize the amount of food discarded at various stages of the supply chain, from production to consumption. This includes initiatives to prevent food spoilage, redistribute surplus food to those in need, and divert organic waste from landfills through composting and anaerobic digestion. By addressing food waste, we can conserve natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with food production, and alleviate hunger and food insecurity. Collaborative efforts involving governments, businesses, and consumers are essential in creating a more sustainable and equitable food system.

Indigenous Food Sovereignty

Indigenous Food Sovereignty asserts the right of Indigenous peoples to define and control their food systems, based on traditional knowledge, cultural practices, and sustainable land stewardship. It emphasizes the importance of preserving biodiversity, traditional crops, and local food networks to promote community health and resilience. Through Indigenous-led initiatives, communities reclaim their ancestral foodways, strengthen cultural identity, and resist colonial food systems that have marginalized and eroded traditional food sources. Indigenous Food Sovereignty embodies a holistic approach to food that honours the interconnectedness of land, culture, and community, fostering self-determination and food justice.

Sustainable Living Tips

This week, we’re focusing on how we can individually create more sustainable food systems.

💖 Eat Seasonally and Locally: Opt for fruits, vegetables, and other foods that are in season and grown locally. Seasonal eating reduces the environmental impact of food transportation, supports local farmers, and ensures fresher, more nutritious produce.

🥕Reduce Meat Consumption: Incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet and reduce your consumption of meat and animal products. Plant-based diets have a lower carbon footprint and require fewer resources such as water and land compared to meat-heavy diets, helping to mitigate climate change and reduce environmental degradation. If you’re eating meat, source your meat from local regenerative farmers as they generally sequester the emissions they produce.

🙌🏽 Support Sustainable Agriculture: Choose products that are certified organic, fair trade, or sustainably produced whenever possible. Look for labels and certifications that indicate environmentally friendly and socially responsible farming practices, such as USDA Organic, Fair Trade Certified, or Rainforest Alliance Certified.

🪱 Minimise Food Waste: Plan meals, buy only what you need, and store food properly to minimize waste. Use leftovers creatively, compost food scraps, and participate in community composting programs if available. By reducing food waste, you not only save money but also conserve resources and reduce methane emissions from decomposing organic matter in landfills.

Depop

Overconsumption is a big reason why we’re in the mess we are today with our climate. There are enough clothes on earth right now to dress six future generations… motto of the story? Buy second-hand! I love Depop because I can find so many cute one of a kind pieces and I feel so good knowing I am literally wearing my values.
