The Green Room: Why You Should Care About Single-Use cups
This week: The problem of single-use cups, Sustainable living tips, Solutions, Good News & more!
Single-use Cups - Not Cute!
Every day in Australia we throw out a staggering 5 million disposable coffee cups. That figure literally makes me feel ill! So this week I want to dive into why we should care about advocating for the phase-out of single-use coffee cups and arming you with the stats to tell your friends to break up with their sup-cup!
The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.
ποΈ The Waste!!
Single-use coffee cups are detrimental to the environment primarily because of their massive contribution to waste. As I said around 5 million coffee cups are thrown away in Australia every day!! These cups are typically made from paper lined with plastic or wax, which makes them difficult to recycle. As a result, most single-use coffee cups end up in landfills, where they can take years to breakdown and never leave our environment. The production and disposal of these cups generate a significant amount of waste, with millions of cups being discarded daily. This excessive waste not only clogs landfills but also increases the demand for raw materials such as timber which promotes deforestation, perpetuating a cycle of environmental degradation.
π² Not The Trees!!
The production of single-use coffee cups requires a substantial amount of natural resources and energy. Manufacturing these cups involves harvesting trees for the paper and extracting petroleum for the plastic lining. This process contributes to deforestation, which diminishes natural habitats and increases carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. The production and transportation of these cups emit greenhouse gases, exacerbating climate change. The energy-intensive nature of their production highlights the environmental cost of a seemingly convenient product.
Just in case your friends needed a little more convincing here are some amazing figures taken from the Keep Cup Impact Calculator:
π¨ 3,315,510 kg of CO2 is released every year during manufacturing.
π€ 297,000,000 kg of plastic produced from fossil fuels.
π 85,302,000,000 MJ of energy being used in production.
π΄ 2,025,000,000 kg of timber cut down.
Businesses can save $18,720,000 AUD on buying single-use cups when switching to reuse and can save $72,834,577.92 on landfill tax.
π¬ Pollution Production !!
The disposal of single-use coffee cups also poses huge pollution risks. When not properly disposed of, these cups often end up as litter, polluting oceans, rivers, and other natural habitats. The plastic lining in the cups can break down into microplastics, which are harmful to marine life and can enter the food chain, ultimately impacting human health. The chemicals used in the production of these cups can leach into the soil and water, causing environmental contamination with forever chemicals. The cumulative impact of single-use coffee cups on pollution and resource depletion shows the need for society to switch to reuse!
Sustainable Living Tips
Since weβre talking about single-use I thought letβs include a few ways we can remember to bring our reusable cup! Because with our busy lives, it can get so easy to forget them.
β¨ Establish a Routine: Integrate the habit of bringing your reusable cup into your daily routine. Place your reusable cup next to items you use every day, such as your keys, wallet, or bag. This way, you'll see it before you leave the house, making it easier to remember. Associating it with a daily activity, like making your morning coffee or preparing your work bag, can reinforce the habit over time.
β° Set Reminders: Utilise technology to help you remember your reusable cup. Set daily alarms or reminders on your phone at times when you typically leave the house or go for coffee. You can also use reminder apps or sticky notes placed on your door or refrigerator to prompt you to grab your cup before heading out.
π«Άπ½ Keep Extras: Place extra reusable cups in convenient locations such as your car, office, or bag. By having a backup cup in places where you frequently find yourself wanting coffee, you reduce the chances of being caught without one. This strategy ensures that even if you forget your primary cup, you still have a reusable option readily available.
π Visual Cues: Use visual cues to remind yourself. For instance, you can hang a hook by your door specifically for your reusable cup or create a designated spot for it in your kitchen. Brightly coloured cups or ones with unique designs can also serve as a visual reminder, making them harder to overlook.
π―ββοΈ Make it a Group Effort: Encourage friends, family, or coworkers to also use reusable cups and remind each other. When everyone around you is committed to the same goal, it creates a supportive environment where forgetting is less likely. You can set group challenges or reminders, making the habit more fun and socially reinforcing.
